What is an Epic?

An agile epic is a body of work that can be broken down into specific tasks (called user stories) based on the needs/requests of customers or end-users. Atlassian, 2022.

How and where to create an Epic?

  1. Go to your board in Jira
  2. Select “Criar” on the Navigation bar
  3. Select epic in “Tipo de item”
  4. Fill in mandatory fields
  5. Click “Criar”

Characteristics of an epic:

  1. Problem: Explanation and background of what the problem is, how is affecting our users or our team.
  2. Hypothesis: Ideas or assumptions on how to solve the problem, this hypothesis should be backed by some type of research.
  3. Research: Features always have a discovery phase, usually this discovery means doing research and/or benchmarking.
  4. Key metric or OKR’s: Once the research is done and the hypothesis is clear, the OKR that the feature aims to move should be clear. There also should be estimations of how much we expect to move said OKR.
  5. Stories (optional): List of how many stories is the epic going to be divided into.
